Math for the week of June 1st

As of this week, your child should have found an apartment, a job, and a car to lease if needed.  If they had a roommate, they had to figure out how much each would pay for rent each month.  For their jobs, they had to calculate how much they would make after 3 weeks of pay.  This 3 weeks of pay and $1000 starting money is what they will use to pay their rent and other bills.  On Tuesday, we are going to estimate utility charges (gas and electric) based on two different sized apartments.  They will also be given algorithms to estimate how much the bills cost if they are up for it.  They’re fairly advanced and involved.  Other kids will just use the size of their units and compare them to the models.  They will also find cable, internet and cell phone plans.  Then they will try to account for all the products and foods they will need from the drugstore and grocery store- going through the day and listing all the things they consume.  After that, they will go online to find prices to estimate how much they will cost.  In the upcoming weeks, we will make a trip to Stop & Shop with the lists to see how to shop cost-effectively.  At the end of next week will have a discussion after working out our budget and see where they can make adjustments (new job or less expensive phones, cable plans) if they are in the red.

Websites to search on:

Please keep in mind, these are definitely not only the sites to use.  They are just ideas to get the students started.  This is not a homework assignment, but students can do work at home if they want.  They need to print out what they find at home including the prices or have a note written by a parent verifying it.

Science for the week of June 1st

This week students will be pollinating the flowers of their plants.  They will learn more about the structure of bees (their long skinny tongues) and how it helps them get down past the anthers and to the stigma of the flower fertilizing it with pollen.  We will also continue plotting our plants’ growth on line plots and learn about the cruciferous family.

Math for the week of May 24th

This week we are starting a new and exciting project in math.  Students will be taking on the responsibilities of an adult, looking through job postings, finding a place to live, writing checks, balancing a checkbook and going grocery shopping. Starting on Monday, students will make up a real life character with a high school education and choose if they have a boyfriend/girlfriend, pet or a child.  They will determine the financial responsibilities these entail.  Then they will use newspaper listings and job sites on the internet to find a job and figure out its weekly salary.  They will also find an apartment or house using newspaper listings and housing sites.

MATH MCAS THIS WEEK!

The math MCAS are this Tuesday and Thursday.  Please make sure your child gets a good night’s rest and eats a healthy breakfast.  We will not be having homework this week so students will have a chance to relax and recuperate.  On Monday, we will review some math vocabulary and then play card games that use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills on Wednesday and Friday.

Writing for the week of May 17th

We’re having a 3rd and 4th grade joint poetry cafe on the night of June 4th.  This week students will continue writing poetry and finalizing drafts of earlier poems in preparation for their poetry books.  Students are writing poems in groups on a certain theme.  Each student is responsible for 6 thoughtfully- crafted poems.  We will work on using metaphors, similes, personification and onomatopoiea this week.
